Having
the Study of our Maritime Past
Benefit both the
Present and Future
Jupiter
Coins with Captain Dominic A. Addario at the helm is
charting a trail blazing course into history books - yet to
be written. Although undersea exploration is more of a
passion than a business, Captain Dom, is embarking on a
business plan to clearly illustrate how Palm Beach County
and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers may – in the future,
save taxpayers millions of dollars at the Federal, State and
local level.
In the process of digging probe excavations, to determine
the scattered pattern of the Jupiter Shipwreck site, a
direct benefit Jupiter Coins now has, is the knowledge of
knowing how much sand exists off shore, immediately south
and adjacent to the Jupiter Inlet. This sand overburden
just happens to be of the highest quality beach and dune
restoration sand available. It is the sand that is
eroding off the dune. The permits are in hand, from
government agencies, to dredge and excavate this sand, to
explore for artifacts and the main cultural deposit of our
mid 17th century shipwreck. A by-product of
these investigations can be the relocation of the ten’s of
thousands of cubic yards of sand to where it is actually
needed – back on the dunes, at a substantially lower cost.
This year the County is importing up to 25,000 cubic yards
of sand by trucking in sand, from an inland source.
Captain Addario has requested a well-known and respected
local marine engineering firm, to assist in presenting the
above concept to the Department of Environmental Resource
Management. Together, they plan to illustrate the ultimate
benefits of mining the near shore inventories of high
quality beach and dune sand currently available. Charles
Isiminger, of Isiminger and Stubbs
Engineering,
agrees it is a great idea and an opportunity for the public
to benefit from the knowledge gained by the study of this
historic maritime event.
Captain
Addario has incorporated a 501 (C3) corporation called, ‘The
Coastal Historic Undersea Management Society, Inc.’ It’s mission
statement is: To educate and benefit the public’s present
and future, while exploring historic undersea events:
channeling our efforts toward reef mitigation, dune and
beach restoration and helping to enhance turtle nesting
habitat.
